Jennifer Wu recommends this book because… “It is not surprising that Lewis’s time-proven views are still flourishing while most other mid-20th-century works are nearly neglected.” (Wall Street Journal) Lewis understood, like few in the past century, just how deeply faith is both imaginative and rational.” (Christianity Today) “As we witness Lewis develop we find that these volumes are working as a kind of unconscious autobiography.” (Books & Culture) Bringing together Lewis’ legendary broadcast talks during World War Two from his three previous books The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear this powerful apologetic for the Christian faith. I love sharing Dorothea’s most delicious recipes as well as my favorite Southern traditions, from midnight barn parties to backyard bridal showers, magical Christmas mornings to rollicking honkytonks. It’s reflected in how I entertain, decorate my home, and make holidays special for my kids-not to mention how I talk, dance, and do my hair (in these pages, you will learn my fail-proof, only slightly insane hot-roller technique). The range of sites around London provides a good overview of the city's famous landmarks. On their travels with the lion they visit St Paul's Cathedral, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge and some of the sights along the South Bank like The Globe Theatre. This one is introducing the city of London and I think it would work well for both children familiar with London as well as those who have never been. James Mayhew has a series of books about Katie that are usually introducing children to a particular artist. When Grandma gets tired they stop a while in Trafalgar Square, and whilst Grandma rests on a bench Katie and her brother find themselves going on a magical adventure with one of the Trafalgar Square lions! Katie is visiting London with her little brother and her Grandma. Summary: A lovely introduction to some of the very famous sights in London, perfect for sharing with children during the Queen's Jubilee year! ![]() ![]() ![]() In Marx and the Anthropocene, Saito continues the project developed in his earlier book, Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism, in which he delved deeply into Marx and Engels’ vast corpus of unpublished work to explain their engagement with environmental issues.Īt first glance, a painstaking analysis of Marx’s private notes on, say, soil chemistry might seem arcane or even cultish: a doomed attempt at quote-mining to refashion a 19th century thinker according to contemporary tastes. The young Marx’s enthusiasm for solids melting into air sounds rather different with the environment collapsing all around us. Think of the Communist Manifesto and its giddy zeal for the transformative program of the bourgeoisie: “constant revolutionising of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation …”. Saito blames this on the longstanding association between socialism and the Promethean notion that nature can and should serve as raw materials for human ends. ![]() The social crises associated with the environmental emergency have not, as yet, spurred the Marxist revival one might expect from an era of political and economic tumult. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the things that stood out for me the most in these character mistakes was what I’ve decided to call ‘the Crimson fiasco’. ![]() It was as if the author decided all of a sudden she didn’t care about Scarlett that much, and so her character arc and personality ceased to be a topic of concern. I never liked Tella that much, but I found myself disliking Scarlett more and more in the next two books. The character that changed the most to me was Scarlett. Their whole personality changes, and it sometimes feels like they’re different people. The characters keep changing throughout the series, and I don’t mean in their character arc. To me, Finale was definitely the weakest book in the series. Needless to say, it will contain spoilers. I will write the bad and she’ll state the good. Because of that, we decided to write this review together. My sister and I read this final one together, and it turns out we have very different opinions. I enjoyed the characters, the reading style, and the overall plotline. First of all, I read it with my sister and that was so much fun. I have many good memories of this series. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When he recovered, Frick busied himself pushing out executives whom he felt insufficiently served his interests, including the superintendent of the Homestead plant. Indeed, Frick orchestrated Carnegie Steel’s response to the Homestead Strike of 1892 although Carnegie was doubtless troubled by the hired strikebreakers’ brutality, “the fact is that he had chosen to absent himself from Homestead when he was well aware of what was coming.” For his trouble, Frick was nearly assassinated by the anarchist Alexander Berkman, who shot and stabbed him. Frick was a tough dealer, but Carnegie was tougher when the coke producers of Pittsburgh agreed to fix a price of $1.50 per ton for the stuff, Carnegie countered that he would pay Frick $1.15 a ton, “and there would be no further discussion of the matter.” Frick became the lesser of equals as the chairman of Carnegie Steel and enjoyed considerable freedom of movement as Carnegie spent more and more of his later life in his native Scotland and left routine administration to Frick and Carnegie Steel president Charles Schwab. ![]() Prolific genre novelist Standiford ( Havana Run, 2003, etc.) turns to fact to portray the fraught partnership of steelmaker Carnegie and Henry Frick, supplier of industrial coke to the world.
